Just what the doctor ordered for the frazzled ‘city’ souls – deep sleep, Karoo air, good water. All this in simple, comfortable cottages with breathtaking views (and the companionship of two gentle dogs). We are cured!

Such fun to experience this gorgeous valley in the mountains. Wonderful site overlooking one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen. Immaculate cottages, built and furnished in perfect good taste, and wonderfully comfortable beds. Everything done in a lovely austere style, superb reading material to dip into briefly. A delightful garden filled with exquisite little plants – the trees are going to be glorious one day. Altogether a great introduction into what is the Little Karoo. Greatly enjoyed. Many thanks.

16th – After a laughter filled journey from Hermanus, with a deviation via Riversdale, where we got rather lost in the hills, we arrived…Lunch at Calitzdorp, and then the car packed with everything but the kitchen sink, int the mountains, marvelling at the pretty ‘Chinese lantern’ bushes by the roadside, and with much expectation, around a final bend and there were the cottages, friendly and peaceful. And what joy once on the vernal, to see the river flowing below, and inside, absolutely everything we needed (should have left the kitchen sink at home!). Cloudy and a little chilly, but after a braai, off to bed…to wake later and open the blind and window to let the night air in – only one little light breaking the darkness of the night.

17th – Sitting on the verandah, in the slight chill of the very early dawn, soaking up the sheer solitude and majesty of the unspoilt surroundings. Lunch all together, another sleep, and then a walk to the Old Post Office and Museum (well done!). Delicious braid Karoo lamb chops and roasted vegetables, and then perchance to dream!

18th – The morning dawned bright and clear, unlike yesterday’s rain, late brunch on the verandah, and another nap. Oh, what joy to just be able to sit and drink it all in, to be with good friends, books, knitting, good food and nice wine. River View is getting to me, and I am awed by the silence, bar the buzzing of the bumble bee, the soughing of the wind through the trees, the pad of Jock’s paws, and the jackal’s cries at night. A walk along the ‘Cliff’s Edge’ route, and back just before a total downpour! Ostrich steaks on the braai for supper!

19th – And now, how sad, our last morning, but after a little early morning rain, some sunshine, and still blessedly cool, we will be on our way. Thank you Lumb family (and Jock and Jessie) for a really soul enriching three nights on your beautiful farm and incredibly well-run and equipped cottage. We loved every minute.
Wim and Penny, Hermanus.

Now beginning to come down really heavily! So glad we decided to try this lovely cottage and we hope to return. A very comfortable place with the most amazing views and great walks. Wish we could stay longer! With news of yet another break-in at home in KZN, we so appreciate the tranquil, peaceful safety of this precious place. Jock is mentioned much i the little book and we now understand why. Tour guide and champion cuddled – it has been hard to stick to the rules and not allow him into the house! If our car wasn’t loaded with lekker wine and port from De Kraans, we might have been pemtped to ‘dog-nap’ Jock. Will miss the little guy!
Mike and Aida, Howick.

Thanks for the great stay.
Guy, Mossel Bay.

Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed staying at the River View Cottages. It is such a special place and we have lovely memories of our (too brief) time there. Regards to Colin, too and a special pat to Jock and Jessie.
